Chris Johnson - At Your Service - Managed Services

After the chill (if not deep
freeze) in tech innovation post- Y2K and the dot.com bubble, there's not
just a thaw, but an explosion of new technologies and ideas, from blogs to
WIKI to IM. There's even a new take on an old idea in IT today, and it's all
about managed services. Just what does "managed services" mean?
The concept of managed services, according to BMC's Chris Johnson, is the
ongoing delivery of services that are well-defined and standardized
according to best practices. It's the same idea, really, as taking your car
to a mechanic for a tuneup: Maybe you know something about how to do the
tuneup yourself, but you're no expert; you know the car runs better when an
expert services it, and you can focus on activities that you do best. IT
customers who buy a managed service know what they are getting up front, and
know that the solution will directly address whatever shortfall they're
experiencing in their organization. Best of all, along with the hardware and
software components that are part of the managed service, says Johnson, come
human beings -- experts in that area that can help ensure that the customer
will get value for his money and that the IT project will be a success.
Today, IT is as necessary to most businesses, small and large, as are lights and phones, yet IT budgets are being scrutinized and stretched to their limits. So, a service that offers the solution to your particular IT challenge, plus the expertise to make the solution a success, without requiring ongoing license fees or extensive personnel searches, equals pure forward momentum for your business. And plenty of businesses -- large, medium-size, and small -- are warming up to the advantages of the "new" idea of managed services.
