In talking with Peter
Armstrong, it becomes clear that he is a guy with a passion for two things:
his work for BMC Software as a corporate strategist, and golf.
In his work life, he travels the world, speaking to customers,
troubleshooting issues with their enterprises, and advising how best to
implement a new practice that BMC is introducing into the IT marketplace
lately, Business Service Management, or BSM. As this approach is something
of a sea change for business people seeking to optimize IT, Peter finds that
explaining the nuts and bolts of BSM might be difficult without using a
metaphor that makes it easier for listeners to grasp. So he came up with a
way to combine his two great passions into one unique story about how BSM
can help businesses achieve the kind of cost-savings and efficiency
everybody dreams of: so, Golf and the Practice of BSM was born.
He begins his story by asking a question: If you were seeking strategies to improve your golf swing, it would probably be best to start by deciding what you want to achieve in your golf game. Do you want to just play golf for the fun of the game? You probably don’t need to make a huge investment in time or money for that; you probably need to do some tweaking. Do you want to be good enough to enter tournaments and perhaps even win a few? You probably need to make a greater commitment in terms of taking lessons, buying new clubs, etc. Do you want to be able to join the PGA tour and compete with the likes of Tiger Woods? Be prepared to devote significant time dollars to achieve that goal.
BSM is a business objective, not an IT objective, emphasizes Armstrong. And with any business objective, it is important to define where you are in the continuum of that goal, and where you want to be. Next, you must break down into achievable parts the steps you need to take to achieve that goal. BSM provides an incremental, proactive approach to enabling you to help your business thrive. And in BSM, as in golf, taking the time upfront to analyze your strengths and weaknesses, and getting the right tools and assistance to address those weaknesses, can take your game and your business to the next level.
