Whether you sought out a blog on IT service management or were brought here by the Google tractor beam, welcome!

My name is Dave Wilt, and I manage solutions marketing for BMC Software's IT asset management solution and IT service management (ITSM) suite of applications.  I work remotely from Bellevue, Washington, just across Lake Washington from Seattle and just 1/2 mile away from Redmond.  That makes me a rare breed in my neighborhood: a software company employee that doesn't work for Microsoft.

I get plenty of opportunities to do marketing elsewhere.  This space is intended to be marketing-free zone where we can have a free exchange of ideas on topics such as IT asset management and discovery, configuration management database (CMDB) and configuration management, change management, incident and problem management and more.

If you're looking for a technical forum, sorry, this isn't it.  There are plenty of good vendor-related and vendor-neutral forums out there. Instead, we'll share concepts, issues and best practices for IT service management.  Some ITSM topics, particularly the CMDB, are new for many companies.  But even those who have been tackling ITSM for years can attest that it's not a project but a journey, striving for the right balance between optimal processes and business results on one hand, and complexity and resources on the other.

So I hope you'll have a chance to share not only your questions, but also your experiences and thoughts.  What are you struggling with? What has worked, what hasn't?  What advice would you give to others starting down the path you've been down before?

So, pack a lunch, put on some comfortable shoes, and let's get started!

"asset" criteria

Dave, your comments are so succinct. I have to admit I've quoted you frequently. Can you comment more on determining which components should be "assets." I've definitely operated under the same definitions you have, but value/cost causes me to ponder. For example, take a hard drive, whereas the cost to replace is relatively small, disposal issues and security risks can make the risk quite high. I counter that the labor to track is too cost prohibitive. The financial track just taken then makes me ask what is the dollar VALUE of a hard drive versus it's lifecycle costs. This snowballed into what is the dollar VALUE of a server processor? It's replacement cost can be quite high, but, again, cost prohibitive to track. It's VALUE would be the loss of use of the processor and it's corresponding server environment. I'm pushing the envelope, but I think what's missing is the eventual link to determine IT's VALUE against TCO.
