I agree with the previous comment ... most of the work I do depends heavily on the work of others. It seems transparently fair and just that my improvements should benefit those that want to use my work.
The core of the argument seems to be that "fair" and "just" are terms for children, and that real adults seek to take and benefit without giving, as a one time gain. I don't think that's just a straw man ... I think a lack of concern for fairness and an excess of concern for one-time benefits to an incumbent go to the heart of the issue.

I'm a pretty old guy, and I still go for fair.
