It’s time for the systems management community to go to camp, and BMC is going to make it happen, BarCamp style.

I always look forward to writing my weekly post, but today I’m so stoked I can’t sit still. You ever go to summer camp? Maybe your friends got to go and you always wished you could? Make some new friends, learn some new things, gain a few notches on your experience belt? Well it’s time for the systems management community to go to camp, and BMC is going to make it happen, BarCamp style.

BarCamps are ad-hoc collaborations born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. They are intense events—lively discussions, killer demos, and live interaction with all participants. The name BarCamp was selected as a complement to Tim O’Reilly’s FooCamp (Friends of O’Reilly). Foo. Bar. Even those of you who don’t spend your nights caressing your keyboards should see it now. If not, check out the BarCamp wiki or the article BusinessWeek recently published. And best of all, just like the best things in life, BarCamp is free. The price of attendance is only participation.

So what’s this got to do with you and systems management? It’s time for the systems management community to start acting like one. BMC is taking the lead, with the help of several open source projects, bloggers, analyst, and even competitors. We’re sponsoring the world’s first Enterprise System’s Management BarCamp. Like BarCamp, DevCamp, and SuperHappyDevHouse, BarCampESM will throw users, developers, vendors, and anyone else interested in systems management together at a non-commercial event, organized by volunteers, with free attendance for all. Everyone’s invited; go sign up on the wiki today. Just add your name and you’re good to go participate.

BarCampESM will be user driven. I’m calling all who have complaints about systems management to present your ideas and solutions to an audience that can actually do something about them. This IS NOT about getting the latest, greatest demo from your friendly neighborhood enterprise sales person. This is one attendee, one voice. Ask the tough questions to your community leaders, and then we’ll work together to address our users needs for a change.

This is a community event, which other vendors will use as an excuse not to participate unless I invite them directly. So here it is: CA, HP, IBM, all my friends in the Little Four, and all the various open source projects out there, you’re invited to join us at BarCampESM. Get thee to the wiki and add your name to the attendee list, suggest a presentation or activity, and help us make this the systems management event.

This is a great idea! I think that it will be great to get all the gang, open source, proprietary, and those in between to get together and talk about how as an industry we can make our software and solutions work together. You got our support.

This is awesome whurley. This is going to be a great vendor natural un-conference and I applaud BMC for stepping up and providing a venue.

I'd be there if it were on the other side of the Ocean.
