to say that Safari would not be more successful by being open source is a bit silly. Linux is most definitely growing in popularity and making it available there would make it gain at least some additional users. That's not to say it couldn't be made available on Linux without open sourcing it, of course.
Also, Firefox is popular because it's good, but it's even more popular because it's open source.
