Advances in the video capabilities of PC and the latest versions of the major operating systems are providing greater opportunities for use of 3d graphics. One way this is being applied is to create user interfaces where the visuals and the interaction style are modeled on the way we interact with objects in the real world. Check out this 3d book. In the mid-90s, I was part of a team at IBM that developed the RealThings interaction style at IBM. http://www-03.ibm.com/easy/page/581 It would have been the basis for the next generation of OS/2, if that operating system had survived.
